Evidence
Almost no controlled human evidence for the medicinal claims. Heavy metal chelation claims circulate widely and are not supported by clinical trials.
Safety
A food. Allergy occurs, and Apiaceae cross-reactivity with celery and carrot is relevant. Photosensitivity from the leaf is reported occasionally.
Regulatory: Permitted as a food and as a listed medicine ingredient.

Three systems, rating the same plant. Where they disagree, none of them is correcting the others — they are separate frameworks that arrived at their categories independently.
Historical use
Among the oldest recorded spices, found in Bronze Age sites and in Tutankhamun’s tomb, and named in the Ebers Papyrus. Used for digestion across every tradition it reached.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. Long use establishes that a plant was widely used, not that it worked, and not that it was safe.
Worth knowing
Coriander is the best-documented case of a genetic difference in how people perceive a plant. Roughly one person in ten reports that the fresh leaf tastes of soap, and a genome-wide association study traced this to variation near OR6A2, a gene for a receptor that binds the aldehydes coriander leaf is rich in.
It matters here for a reason beyond curiosity. Taste and smell were the primary instruments every tradition in this collection used to classify plants — pungent, bitter, cooling, sweet. If a detectable fraction of the population perceives a common plant fundamentally differently for genetic reasons, then the sensory basis of those classification systems is less universal than they assume.
The chelation claim is worth naming as unsupported, because people take it instead of treatment for heavy metal exposure, which is a real and treatable condition.
