What is in it
Evidence
Small trials on fatigue and endurance with inconsistent results. Better evidence exists for a combination product with Andrographis in respiratory infection than for eleuthero alone.
Safety
Generally well tolerated. Insomnia and irritability reported. Effects on blood pressure and blood glucose are documented. A famous 1990 case report of neonatal androgenisation attributed to Siberian ginseng was later traced to adulteration with a different plant, Periploca sepium — which is itself the more instructive story.

Regulatory: Permitted as a listed ingredient. Labelling rules in several countries now restrict the use of "ginseng" for this plant, since it is not a Panax.
How the traditions classify it
Three systems, rating the same plant. Where they disagree, none of them is correcting the others — they are separate frameworks that arrived at their categories independently.
Historical use
Used in Chinese and Russian far-eastern practice. Studied extensively in the Soviet Union from the 1960s by Israel Brekhman, who promoted it as a cheaper substitute for Panax ginseng and as the archetypal adaptogen.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. Long use establishes that a plant was widely used, not that it worked, and not that it was safe.
Worth knowing
Siberian ginseng is not ginseng. It is in the same family as Panax and no closer, and the name was a marketing decision by Soviet researchers promoting a cheaper alternative — which is why several jurisdictions now restrict what can be labelled ginseng at all.
Its most cited safety incident turned out to be an adulteration story. A 1990 case report described a newborn with signs of androgenisation whose mother had taken Siberian ginseng throughout pregnancy, and it circulated for years as evidence the herb was hormonally active. Subsequent analysis of the product found no Eleutherococcus; it contained Periploca sepium, Chinese silk vine, a known adulterant.
So a herb acquired a decade of reputation for an effect caused by a different plant sold under its name. That is the supply-chain problem producing a false safety signal rather than hiding a true one, and it is why identity testing matters in both directions.
