- A succulent perennial of cold rocky ground to about forty centimetres, with fleshy grey-green leaves and dense heads of yellow flowers. The cut rhizome smells of roses, which is what names it.
What is in it
Evidence
Small trials report reduced fatigue and improved performance under stress. Systematic reviews consistently describe the evidence as promising and the methodology as weak, and much of the foundational Soviet work is not accessible in a form that meets modern standards.
Safety
Generally well tolerated. Agitation, insomnia and irritability are reported. Case reports of mania in people with bipolar disorder. Effects on serotonergic systems raise theoretical interaction concerns.

Historical use
Used across Scandinavia, Russia and Central Asia for fatigue, cold and endurance. Studied extensively in the Soviet Union from the 1960s within the same adaptogen research programme that produced the term.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. Long use establishes that a plant was widely used, not that it worked, and not that it was safe.
Worth knowing
Rhodiola is the herb where adulteration and conservation are the same problem seen twice.
Demand rose sharply through the 2010s. Rhodiola rosea grows slowly in Arctic and alpine ground and takes years to reach harvestable size. DNA barcoding studies of retail products have found a substantial proportion containing other Rhodiola species — R. crenulata in particular — which have different chemistry and no comparable evidence.
So the trial literature, thin as it is, was conducted on R. rosea, and a meaningful share of what is sold under that name is something else. Even a good trial result would not transfer to the bottle.
