Morphology
A low woody subshrub to about forty centimetres with tiny grey-green leaves rolled at the edges and small pale pink to lilac flowers.

Evidence

Thyme preparations, usually combined with ivy or primrose, have reasonable trial support for acute bronchitis and productive cough, and appear in European regulatory monographs. Thymol has genuine, well-characterised antimicrobial activity.

Safety

Culinary use is benign. The essential oil is a strong mucous membrane irritant, must never be taken neat, and is dangerous in children. Thymol is toxic in quantity.

Interactions: Theoretical additive effect with anticoagulants

Regulatory: Permitted as a food and as a listed medicine ingredient. Thymol remains an active in some registered antiseptics and mouthwashes.

Historical use

Used from Egyptian embalming onward, and consistently in European practice for cough, chest complaints and as an antiseptic. Thymol was a standard surgical and dental antiseptic before modern alternatives.

Recorded as history and attributed where possible. Long use establishes that a plant was widely used, not that it worked, and not that it was safe.

Worth knowing

Thyme is the entry that shows a traditional use surviving contact with laboratory microbiology more or less intact. Thymol genuinely kills bacteria and fungi, it was a standard antiseptic before better options existed, and it is still in mouthwash and some registered preparations.

What did not survive is the leap from a surface antiseptic to a systemic one. Thymol works on things it can touch. Swallowing thyme does not deliver a meaningful antiseptic concentration to an infection anywhere inside the body, and the cough evidence works through a different route entirely.
