Why it is that colour
The body colour comes from the original resin chemistry and from oxidation over time. The blue fluorescence of Dominican amber is genuine fluorescence, from aromatic compounds in the resin.
Safety
Safe to handle. Amber teething necklaces are widely sold on the claim that succinic acid is released through the skin to relieve pain; no meaningful quantity is released, no benefit has been demonstrated, and both the strangulation and choking risks are real enough that paediatric bodies in several countries have issued warnings against them.
Where it comes from
Baltic amber is mined industrially in the Kaliningrad region, which holds most of the world reserves. Burmese amber from Kachin State is scientifically extraordinary and ethically severe: the mines are in an active conflict zone, several palaeontological journals have restricted publication on Burmese amber collected after 2017, and the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology asked its members to stop working on it.
Historical use
Traded across Europe for four thousand years along what is conventionally called the Amber Road. The Amber Room at Tsarskoye Selo, panelled entirely in it, was looted by German forces in 1941 and has never been found.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Genuinely ancient and continuously documented. The Greek for amber is elektron, and because rubbed amber attracts light objects it gives us the word electricity. Baltic amber moved south along established trade routes from the Bronze Age. Classical and medieval sources treat it as protective and medicinal.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.

Worth knowing
Amber is not a mineral. It is fossil tree resin, produced by a living thing, and minerals are by definition inorganic — which is why it sits in this collection under a different status from almost everything around it.
Scientifically it is one of the most valuable materials there is, because it traps whole organisms in three dimensions with their soft tissue intact. Burmese amber is around a hundred million years old and has yielded feathered dinosaur tails, a complete hatchling bird, and thousands of insect species. It has also become an ethical crisis for palaeontology: the deposits are in Kachin State, the same conflict as the jadeite, and buying specimens funds it. Several journals now decline papers on material collected after 2017.
The teething necklaces are worth stating plainly. The proposed mechanism — body heat releasing succinic acid, absorbed through the skin, acting as an analgesic — does not survive contact with either chemistry or trial evidence. The risks are ordinary and physical: a cord around an infant's neck, and beads that come off.
