Why it is that colour
The famous rainbow colours are not the metal. They are a thin oxide layer causing interference, exactly as with oil on water, and on laboratory-grown crystals the thickness is controlled deliberately.
Safety
Unusually benign for a heavy metal. Bismuth subsalicylate is the active ingredient in some over-the-counter stomach remedies, and bismuth is used as a non-toxic replacement for lead in shot and solder.
Where it comes from
Mostly a by-product of lead and copper refining. China dominates supply. The hopper crystals sold in shops are grown by melting bismuth and letting it cool slowly, and they can be made at home on a stove.
Historical use
Long confused with lead and tin. Its most striking physical property is that it expands on freezing, which it shares with water and almost nothing else, and that made it useful in type metal because the cast letters filled the mould completely.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Bismuth was not distinguished from lead and tin until the fifteenth century and has no traditional attribution. The stepped rainbow crystals that carry its modern reputation are a manufactured object of the twentieth century, and the meanings attached to them are recent and online.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Worth knowing
Nearly every bismuth crystal on sale is manufactured, and this is not a scandal — it is generally disclosed, and natural bismuth does not form those shapes anyway. The stepped hopper geometry happens because the edges of a growing crystal advance faster than the faces, leaving terraced hollows, and the effect is dramatic when growth is fast.
It is a good example of something in this collection that is honestly artificial. The material is real, the process is real, the beauty is real, and nobody is pretending it came out of the ground. Compare that with goldstone or opalite, and the difference is disclosure rather than manufacture.
