Why it is that colour
Finely dispersed iron oxide. Heating converts paler yellowish material to strong red by dehydrating the iron compound, and this has been done deliberately for millennia.

Where it comes from
The Khambhat district of Gujarat has been cutting and heat-treating carnelian continuously for over four thousand years, and remains a major centre. Silicosis among agate workers there is a documented and serious occupational health problem.
Historical use
Traded across the ancient world from the Indus Valley to Mesopotamia to Egypt. The long barrel-shaped etched carnelian beads of Harappa are among the most recognisable objects of Bronze Age trade, and they turn up in royal graves at Ur.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
One of the best-documented ancient stones. Egyptian funerary texts specify carnelian for particular amulets, notably the tyet knot of Isis, and the Book of the Dead names it directly. Roman signet rings are frequently carnelian. Its modern associations with courage, vitality and creativity are later, though they sit closer to the ancient sense of it than most such continuities do.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Sold as this, but not
Worth knowing
The Harappan bead industry is worth pausing on. Craftsmen in the Indus Valley worked out how to etch white patterns onto carnelian using an alkaline paste and heat, and how to drill beads more than ten centimetres long with a stone drill — a technically formidable operation that could take days per bead. Those beads travelled fifteen hundred miles and ended up in Mesopotamian royal burials.
The health cost of that industry has never gone away. Agate workers in Khambhat, cutting the same material in the same region today, have among the highest documented rates of silicosis of any occupational group anywhere.
