Why it is that colour
Metallic lustre of lead sulfide. It cleaves into perfect cubes, which makes it one of the most recognisable minerals there is.
Safety
Lead sulfide, and heavy enough that its weight is startling. Lead is a cumulative neurotoxin with no safe exposure level, and it is particularly damaging to children. Galena is soft and sheds. Handle it minimally, keep it away from children, wash your hands, and never powder it, put it in water, or bring it near food. It is nevertheless sold as a tumbled stone.
Where it comes from
The principal ore of lead worldwide, and a major source of silver, which substitutes for lead in the structure. Broken Hill in New South Wales is one of the largest orebodies ever found and made Australia a mining nation.
Historical use
Roman lead pipes, lead glazes, lead paint, leaded petrol and lead shot all begin here. The consequences of that are among the largest environmental health stories of the twentieth century, and childhood lead exposure remains a live problem in many places.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Mined since antiquity for lead and for the silver it contains, but with little symbolic tradition — galena is a working mineral rather than a sacred one. Powdered galena was also used as kohl in Egypt, alongside stibnite. Modern meanings are recent and sparse.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Worth knowing
Galena is where a great deal of history's lead came from, and lead is the clearest case there is of a substance whose harms took millennia to see. The Romans lined their aqueducts with it, sweetened wine with lead acetate, and cooked in lead-lined vessels. Lead paint was standard into the twentieth century. Tetraethyl lead was added to petrol from 1923 and not fully removed worldwide until 2021.
Every stage of that had defenders and evidence against it at the time. The pattern — a useful, cheap, versatile material whose damage is slow, cumulative, and hardest on children — is worth carrying to any argument about whether something is safe because it is natural or because it is traditional.
