Why it is that colour
Pure halite is colourless. Pink usually comes from bacteria or iron impurities in the deposit. The rare blue is a genuine oddity: it comes from colloidal sodium metal produced by natural radiation knocking the structure about.
Safety
It is salt. Safe to handle and, unusually for this collection, safe to eat, which does not make it a remedy. Salt lamps and salt caves are marketed for respiratory benefit; the evidence for halotherapy is weak and the lamps in particular emit no meaningful quantity of anything at all.
Where it comes from
Khewra in Pakistan is the source of essentially all pink Himalayan salt, and it is in the Salt Range in Punjab, some hundreds of kilometres from the Himalayas. The mine is operated by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation. Wieliczka in Poland, worked from the thirteenth century, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Historical use
One of the most economically consequential minerals in history. Salt taxes have started revolutions, salt roads shaped trade routes, and the word salary derives from the Latin for salt money. Preservation by salting is a precondition for storing food and therefore for cities.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Salt carries an enormous and genuinely ancient body of symbolism across almost every culture — purification, covenant, hospitality, preservation, and the practice of throwing spilled salt over the shoulder. That symbolism attaches to salt as a substance and to its economic value, and it is real and old. The modern marketing of Himalayan salt lamps and salt rooms is a separate and recent phenomenon.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Worth knowing
Halite is in the collection because it makes two points at once.
The first is that the genuinely ancient symbolic traditions cluster around substances that mattered materially. Salt has been sacred in more cultures than almost anything else, and the reason is not mysterious: without it, food does not keep and people do not survive summers. The symbolism follows the economics.
The second is the lamp. A Himalayan salt lamp is a lump of Punjabi rock salt with a bulb in it, marketed on the claim that it releases negative ions and cleans the air. Measured, it does not: any ion output is orders of magnitude below what would be needed to affect anything, and a warm lamp is a warm lamp. That the rock is genuinely ancient and genuinely from a famous mine is true and irrelevant.
