Why it is that colour
Manganese gives the lilac. The lithium that defines it is colourless.
Safety
Safe to handle. It is soft, flaky and easily abraded, and the flakes should not be inhaled. It genuinely contains lithium, and it is sometimes sold with the implication that this connects it to lithium as a psychiatric medication. It does not: the lithium is locked in a silicate lattice, none of it is bioavailable through skin contact, and therapeutic lithium is dosed and monitored by blood test for good reason.
Where it comes from
A lithium ore, and therefore now caught up in battery demand. Lepidolite was long a minor source because separating lithium from it is harder than from spodumene, but rising prices have made it economic, which has pulled specimen material into a much larger industrial market.
Historical use
A source of lithium and of rubidium. Lithium itself was first isolated from petalite in 1817 by Johan August Arfwedson.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Named in 1792 from the Greek for scale, after its flaky habit. No traditional history. The modern association with calm and emotional balance dates from the New Age literature and leans heavily on the lithium connection.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Worth knowing
Lepidolite is the clearest case in the collection of a claim built on a true fact that carries none of the weight put on it.
The true fact: lepidolite contains lithium, several per cent by weight, and it is mined as a lithium ore. The claim: that holding it therefore has a mood-stabilising effect analogous to lithium medication. That does not follow at any point. The lithium is chemically bound in a silicate framework, it is not released by contact with skin, and even if it were, therapeutic lithium works at a narrow blood concentration that requires regular blood tests to maintain safely — too little does nothing and too much causes kidney damage.
Anyone taking lithium for bipolar disorder is on a medicine with a genuinely narrow therapeutic window. A stone is not a version of it.
