Why it is that colour
Not an impurity in the ordinary sense. The pink comes from microscopic fibrous inclusions of a borosilicate mineral related to dumortierite, dispersed through the quartz. That is why rose quartz is almost always cloudy and almost never forms clear crystals.

No hazard from handling.
Where it comes from
Abundant, cheap and mined at scale, largely in Brazil and Madagascar. Madagascan small-scale mining has been repeatedly documented as informal, poorly paid and in places involving children — the same supply chain that produces the mica investigated by journalists and NGOs.
Historical use
Used for beads and small carvings from at least 7000 BC in Mesopotamia. Prized in Chinese carving traditions. Never a high-status gem, because it is opaque, common and does not take a brilliant polish.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Rose quartz beads have been found at Mesopotamian and Egyptian sites, so the material was used and valued in antiquity. The specific and now universal association with love, the heart and self-compassion is not documented in those sources; it belongs to the modern crystal literature and became fixed in the 1970s and 80s.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Sold as this, but not
Worth knowing
There is a genuine mineralogical curiosity here. What is sold as rose quartz — massive, cloudy, pink — and the rare true "pink quartz" that grows as actual terminated crystals are coloured by different mechanisms. The crystalline kind is coloured by aluminium and phosphorus and fades in sunlight; the massive kind gets its colour from mineral fibres and does not. They are usually lumped together under one name and are not really the same phenomenon.
It is also, by volume, one of the most heavily sold stones in the wellbeing market, and one of the cheapest to extract. Those two facts are related.
