From organic-rich sediment deposited around two billion years ago in what is now Karelia, then metamorphosed. Its origin is genuinely unusual, since it predates land plants by a very long way and the carbon must be microbial.

Why it is that colour

Carbon. Elite or noble shungite is up to 98 per cent carbon; the common material is a carbon-bearing rock with silicate minerals making up most of the mass.

Safety

Safe to handle. It is sold in quantity for putting in drinking water, which is the one use worth cautioning against: shungite deposits contain variable amounts of other minerals including sulfides, and the composition of a given piece is not knowable from looking at it.

Where it comes from

A single deposit in Russian Karelia supplies the entire world market, which makes shungite unusually traceable and unusually exposed to sanctions and export disruption.

Historical use

Mined as an industrial filler and as a source of carbon. It gives its name to a geological period, the Shunga event, marking a major carbon burial episode in the Palaeoproterozoic.

Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.

What is attributed to it, and since when

Local Karelian use of shungite spring water is documented from the eighteenth century, and Peter the Great established a spa at Marcial Waters in 1719 — though the therapeutic claims there concerned the iron-rich water rather than the rock. The modern international reputation of shungite is entirely an internet phenomenon of the 2010s, and it is built almost wholly on the fullerene claim.

Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.

Worth knowing

Shungite is the clearest modern example of a real scientific finding being converted into a marketing claim that does not follow from it.

The finding: shungite genuinely contains fullerenes — closed cages of carbon atoms, the most famous being the sixty-atom buckminsterfullerene that won a Nobel Prize in 1996. Their discovery in a natural rock in the 1990s was a legitimate result and a surprise.

The claim: that shungite therefore purifies water, neutralises electromagnetic radiation and blocks 5G. None of this follows. Fullerenes are present at very low concentrations, they are not released into water in meaningful quantity, and no arrangement of carbon in a lump on a desk attenuates radio frequencies at any useful level. The 5G application in particular is a straightforward invention of the 2019 to 2021 period.

It is a useful shape to recognise: an unusual and genuine property, cited accurately, doing no work at all in the argument it is attached to.
