Why it is that colour
Manganese. The purest material is a vivid mandarin orange, one of the most saturated colours in any gemstone.

Safe to handle.
Where it comes from
The Namibian Kunene deposit produced spectacular mandarin material in the 1990s and is largely exhausted. Nigerian and Tanzanian production continues.
Historical use
A minor gem until Namibian mandarin garnet appeared in 1991 and created a market for it almost overnight.
Recorded as history and attributed where possible. That a stone was used for something establishes that people used it, not that it worked.
What is attributed to it, and since when
Named in 1832 after the Spessart district in Bavaria. No pre-modern attribution distinct from garnet generally.
Described, not endorsed. Dating a claim is not the same as assessing it — but an association that first appears in a book published in 1985 is not an ancient inheritance, whatever the label says. A sincere account of feeling better is compatible with the stone doing nothing — see the placebo effect.
Worth knowing
Spessartine is another stone with a documented commercial birthday. Bright orange garnet was a collector's curiosity until a deposit opened in Namibia in 1991, the trade named the material mandarin garnet, and it became briefly fashionable. The deposit ran out within a few years.
The pattern recurs often enough in this collection to be worth naming: a deposit is found, a marketing name is coined, demand appears, meanings follow, and the deposit is exhausted. The meanings tend to outlive the supply.
