Michel Gauquelin
Set out to prove astrology, demolished nearly all of it, found one anomaly that would not go away, and spent the rest of his life defending it.
Who they were
Michel Gauquelin (1928–1991) was a French psychologist and statistician who conducted the largest and most careful empirical investigation of astrology ever attempted, and became the source of its single most-cited positive result — the so-called Mars effect.
He is an unusually important figure for a site trying to report honestly, because his story refuses to serve either side cleanly.
Where they came from
He was fascinated by astrology as a boy, reportedly casting charts for schoolfriends, and studied psychology and statistics at the Sorbonne with the explicit intention of putting the subject on a scientific footing. He worked throughout with his wife Françoise Schneider Gauquelin, whose contribution to the data collection and analysis was substantial and is frequently under-credited.
Their method was straightforward and expensive: obtain birth records — real registry data with recorded times — for large numbers of people in known professions, compute planetary positions, and compare the distributions against what chance would produce.
What they taught
Most of astrology fails. This came first and it is what he is least remembered for. Testing the standard apparatus against his data, Gauquelin found nothing. No effect for zodiac signs. No effect for the traditional aspects. No effect for most of the significations. He published these negative results at length, and French astrologers were not pleased with him.
The planetary sectors. What he did find was that certain planets appeared more often than chance predicted in particular sectors of the local sky — just after rising, and just after culminating — at the births of people who became eminent in specific fields. Mars for sports champions. Saturn for scientists. Jupiter for actors and politicians. The effect appeared only for the eminent, not the ordinary, and only for a handful of planets in a handful of sectors.
Character traits. He later argued that the planetary positions correlated with personality descriptors drawn from biographies rather than with the professions directly.
What we can and cannot say
We can say the work was serious. He used registry birth times rather than self-reported ones, worked with large samples, published his data, and invited testing. That is more methodological care than most parapsychology and considerably more than most astrology.
We can say the replication history is a mess, and that the mess is not all his fault. The Belgian Comité Para obtained figures resembling his and disputed the interpretation. A committee associated with the American sceptical organisation CSICOP conducted a test, reported a negative result, and was then accused by one of its own members, Dennis Rawlins, of mishandling the statistics and suppressing data that had initially favoured Gauquelin. Rawlins's 1981 account remains an embarrassment for organised scepticism and is cited by astrologers with complete justification.
We can say the effect nonetheless did not survive. The French CFEPP study — designed with Gauquelin's own participation, using an independently compiled sample — found no Mars effect. The most widely accepted explanation for his original results is selection bias in sample composition: the way eminent athletes were chosen for inclusion, from sources that were not independent of the outcome, can generate exactly this kind of artefact. Gauquelin rejected that explanation and defended his work until the end.
We can say the ending was sad, and it belongs in the record. Gauquelin took his own life in 1991, at sixty-two, and asked for his files to be destroyed — a request that was partly carried out. The CFEPP results were published after his death.
We cannot say he was a fraud, and the accusation has been made carelessly. The available evidence suggests a man who followed a genuine anomaly for thirty years, who had already shown himself willing to publish results that destroyed most of the tradition he loved, and who could not accept that the one surviving finding was an artefact.
What his career actually demonstrates is how hard this kind of research is, and how a statistically real pattern in a dataset can be produced by how the dataset was assembled. That is a more useful lesson than either "astrology was vindicated" or "the sceptics won", and it is what the article on the evidence is built around.
