Tropical and sidereal
Two zodiacs, twenty-four degrees apart, both ancient and both in daily use — which means most Westerners are a different sign in India.
What it is
Two different ways of anchoring the zodiac to the sky, producing two different answers for the same birth.
The tropical zodiac anchors zero degrees Aries to the vernal equinox — the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator going north, the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. It is a seasonal frame. The signs are tied to the sun's relationship with the earth's tilt, not to any stars.
The sidereal zodiac anchors the signs to the fixed stars. Zero degrees Aries is a point defined relative to actual stellar positions.
If those two definitions once coincided, they no longer do, and the reason is a real and well-measured astronomical phenomenon.
Where it came from
The earth's axis wobbles like a slowing top, completing one circuit in roughly 25,800 years. The consequence is precession of the equinoxes: the point where the sun crosses the equator drifts slowly backwards against the stars, at about one degree every 72 years.
Hipparchus identified this around 130 BCE by comparing his own stellar measurements with Babylonian records — one of the more impressive pieces of ancient science, since the effect is tiny within a human lifetime and only shows up across centuries.
The two zodiacs coincided somewhere around the early centuries CE — the exact date depends on which correction you use — and have been separating ever since. They are now about twenty-four degrees apart, which is most of a whole sign.
Western astrology, following Ptolemy, uses the tropical zodiac. Indian astrology uses the sidereal, applying a correction called the ayanāṃśa to convert between them; several ayanāṃśas exist, the Lahiri value being the most widely used and the Indian government standard, and practitioners disagree by a degree or two about which is right.
How it is used
The practical consequence is easy to state and startling to most people meeting it for the first time.
Someone born in early August is a Sun-Leo in Western astrology. In Vedic astrology, with roughly twenty-four degrees subtracted, the same birth usually places the sun in Cancer. Not a shade of difference in interpretation — a different sign, a different ruling planet, a different element, a different set of attributed characteristics.
Roughly speaking, anyone born in the first three weeks or so of a Western sign will be assigned the previous sign in the Vedic system. That is most people.
What we can and cannot say
We can say the astronomy is not in dispute. Precession is measured, understood and factored into every telescope pointing and satellite ephemeris in use. Both traditions are aware of it; this is not a gotcha, and Western astrologers have written about it at length.
We can say the traditions defend their choices coherently. Tropicalists argue the zodiac was always seasonal — that Aries means the quality of the year's beginning, not a group of stars — and point out that Ptolemy defined it that way explicitly in the second century, already knowing about precession. Siderealists argue that the whole point was the stars, that the seasonal reading is a rationalisation, and that a system claiming celestial influence ought to be pointed at actual celestial objects. Both arguments have force.
And this is the most useful thing in the section. Two traditions, each with two thousand years of practice, enormous internal literatures, sophisticated technique and large numbers of serious practitioners, take the same person's birth and return incompatible answers about something basic. Both cannot be reading the sky the way they say they are.
That does not by itself refute either. A tropicalist can say the sidereal zodiac is simply the wrong frame, and vice versa. What it does is make one common defence unavailable: the claim that astrology's antiquity and cross-cultural persistence is evidence for it. Persistence is not convergence. Two long traditions disagreeing does not look like independent discovery of the same underlying fact — it looks like what happens when a system is internally consistent and never checked against an outside standard.
We cannot say which is correct, because there is no test that distinguishes them. And that is itself the interesting result. If the two systems produced different predictions that could be compared against outcomes, the question would be settled. That they can coexist for two millennia without the disagreement ever being resolvable is a fact about the discipline, not about the sky.
